CHOOSING A TOURNAMENT

Before taking part in a poker tournament, you should first choose the type of tournament that it would be more suitable for you.

Once you had decided in which modality of poker you prefer to play, you would have to select the precise tournament.

The most common modalities of tournaments are the following ones:
-Mayor tournaments: characterized by its large duration and high buy in prizes
-Minor Tournaments: as its own name indicates they are shorter and less expensive
-Free rolls: there is no buy in prize
-Guaranteed tournaments: the amount of the prize pool is decided from the beginning
-Satellite: the winners will win a seat at major tournaments
-Shootout and Freezout: the winner of each shootout will confront the rest of winners at the freezout tournament, in which the players that lose all their chips will be eliminated until there is only one player.

BASIS OF POKER TOURNAMENTS

There is a great variety of poker tournaments in both online poker rooms and offline ones. Those tournaments are different due to the fact that they have diverse structure, number of players and duration among many other factors.

Before deciding in which tournament to take part it is advisable to make sure that you are familiar with the terminology that describes the competition, as that is vital to understand the terms and conditions of the tournament.


In the majority of them it is needed to pay an “entry fee” which is a small amount of money for the competition organizers. Moreover, it is also mandatory to pay the “buy in”, which is the price you have to pay to obtain the tournament chips and that will be added to the prize pool.

In some poker tournaments it is also required to pay the “re-buy” which will give the players the chance to buy more chips depending on the amount that they already posses. Similar to that is the “add-on”, which will also allow players to buy more chips at a different tournament stages regardless the amount they already have.

Lastly, the “prize pool” it refers to the amount of the final prize that will be shared among the players that finish in the first positions.
